Oran is a city and major port on the north-west coast of Algeria. The total population was 759,645 in 2008, whilst the metropolitan area has a population of approximately 1,500,000, making it the second largest city in Algeria. The city was under French control from 1831 to 1962 when the country achieved independence. Oran is located in Northern Algeria, and faces the constant threat of earthquakes. However, the last major earthquake was in 1790 which killed 3,000 people.
