The capital and largest city of Tunisia, Tunis lies on the Gulf of Tunis on Africa's Mediterranean coast. The city has a population (2008) of about 1.2 million. At the centre of the city is the medina, "a dense agglomeration of alleys and covered passages, full of intense scents and colours, boisterous and active trade, a surfeit of goods on offer ranging from leather to plastic, tin to the finest filigree, tourist souvenirs to the works of tiny crafts shops." (Wikipedia).Tunisia was occupied by the French from 1881 until the country achieved independence in 1956. All our postcards date from the period of French occupation, which is reflected in their inscriptions.
