Copenhagen is the capital and most populated city of Denmark, with an urban population of 1,265,000 (2015) and a metropolitan population of just under two million. It lies on the eastern coast of Zealand, 28 km to the northwest of Malmö, Sweden. The city stretches across parts of the island of Amager and contains the enclave of Frederiksberg. Archaeological discoveries indicate that Copenhagen dates from the 11th Century. The city centre lies in the area originally defined by the old ramparts, which are still kept as a partial green belt around it.
