Reading is the county town of Berkshire and lies at the confluence of the Rivers Thames and Kennet, just off the M4 motorway and about half way between London and Swindon. An abiding memory is picking up a copy of a book called "A History of Reading" and finding it was about the town of Reading and not "reading". For those of you who are not acquainted with this Berkshire town, it is pronounced "redding". (I wonder how the other Readings round the world are pronounced.) It is a bustling town with a good shopping centre, and has expanded beyond recognition over the past 45 years.
