Blackpool is a seaside town on the Lancashire coast, about 40 miles north of Manchester. In 1846 a railway link to the town was completed and this resulted in a rapid growth of tourism and of the town itself. The 158 metre tower, based on the Eiffel Tower, opened in 1894. During the second world war my mother often took me to Blackpool to stay with my aunt who ran a boarding house in Bispham. It was also fairly safe from bombing !! The number of tourists has fallen greatly since the 1960s when people began flying to the Mediterranean resorts, but Blackpool remains one of the country's most popular holiday spots.
