Shipston-on-Stour is a small Warwickshire market town about 8 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon. The name "Shipston" was originally "Sheep-wash-town" and as is implied by the name, the town was an important sheep-market town for many years. In 1836 a branch line from the horse-powered tramway, built a few years before to link Stratford with Moreton-in-Marsh, was opened and enabled the town to continue to flourish as the demand for wool waned. Shipston was also an important coaching town.
