Gdansk, also known as Danzig, its German name, is the sixth largest city and the principal seaport of Poland and the capital of Pomerania. The city lies on the southern coast of Gdańsk Bay (on the Baltic), and together with the spa town of Sopot, the city of Gdynia and suburban communities, forms the Greater Gdansk Metropolitan area with a population of over a million. Gdańsk, situated at the mouth of the Motława River, is the largest city in the province of Eastern Pomerania. Historically an important seaport since medieval times and subsequently a principal ship-building centre, Gdańsk was a member of the Hanseatic League. Together with the nearby port of Gdynia it remains an important industrial centre.
